Looking for work can be a job in itself. You need a perfect CV, interview preparation, cover letters, even presentation. It would help if you have it organized. That is why we have compiled 8 steps that will help you further. Open an excel sheet for yourself to make your job search as organised as possible. It will help you track your efforts.  

  1. Investigate and know the market

Look at what other people with similar experience and skills are doing. Then, figure out the position they are most qualified for. If necessary, take a look at their LinkedIn profiles.  

You will find some good information about what position you are most likely qualified so you can calculate your worth. This information will keep you focused on your goal, and it will help you a lot when you get to the personal interview phase. 

  1. Search, search and search more

Use not only major job search engines such as LinkedIn Jobs and Indeed, but also use other niche job boards such as Hospitables.com or local ones. Make a list of which companies make you happy and go directly to their company’s websites.   

  1. Build a contact network and use it!

This is precisely why your network of contacts is essential! Considering that many job offers do not get to see the light in LinkedIn Jobs or similar pages, it is not about what you know, but who you know.  

Talk to your friends, family, neighbours, and more. Moreover, consult them if they know directly or indirectly about job offers within the industry where you want to place. Those responsible for contracting companies will prefer to opt for someone who comes with a personal recommendation than for someone who comes without it. That’s a fact.   

  1. Build your digital profile

It does not make any sense to show your future employer your Facebook photos of the party you went to last weekend. I do not think this will impress them very much. Make sure to configure all the social profiles that you consider to be private as private.  

The same applies to Twitter and Instagram unless you use these networks for networking or for sharing professional information, in which case you may even want to highlight your presence in these networks. Remember: those responsible for human resources of companies are going to search you on Google.  

  1. Adorn your CV

Put only experiences that are relevant to the position you are trying to achieve. You can also mention volunteering, which will add value to your profile, even if you have little work experience. Also, make a résumé that is easy to read, it should be well organised (maximum 2 pages) and without grammatical errors, spelling or accents.  

  1. Writing a cover letter

This is the opportunity to explain what you could not in your CV. Do not write only “me, me, me,” but concentrate on how you will contribute. Highlight what you are going to provide to the position, and focus on how you are going to grow and achieve results together. Print it and be concise. No one is going to read a cover letter of 2 sheets and 10 paragraphs. 

  1. Follow up your job search (but do not look desperate either)

You should know something between 2 to 4 weeks after sending your curriculum. If not, calling or sending an email will show your interest in the position, and of course, it’s a good thing. However, please do not pass by calling without stopping because it may seem that you are so desperate. Nobody likes it.

  1. Time to celebrate – you have a job! (or overcome a no)

Unfortunately receiving a “no” is common. However, a company does not want you (or more than one), does not mean that it will be the same in others. You have not found your place yet, but you will find it. So do not be disappointed, learn from the experience and continue. In the end, the one who follows it gets it.
